Can proprietors be sued to cover medical expenses after a customer is injured?

An elderly customer in shop stumbles, falls and breaks hip. Can proprietors of shop be sued to cover medical expenses? Would a liability insurance policy be recommend?

It depends on how and why the elderly customer stumbles and is hurt. I believe that a proprietor should have liability insurance. It's a necessary business expense. It's somewhat analogous to a homeowner having liability insurance on their home, although the probability of an incident occurring is higher for a business proprietor since businesses ideally have a lot of customers.
