If I was at fault in a car accident, should I still hire a personal injury lawyer to defend my case?

I was making an illegal U-turn when a car making a left turn hit my car. I admitted that the accident was my fault and at the scene of the accident the other driver seemed fine. Now she is claiming that she was injured and wants to sue me for her supposed injury. Do I have a chance of contesting against her?

If you had insurance at the time of your accident, your insurance company will defend you with their own attorneys. If you had no insurance, then you should hire counsel to defend you.

You need to contact your insurance company and advise them of the accident. They are contractually obligated to defend you for any accident for which you may have been at-fault.

If you had auto liability insurance at the time of the collision, you will need to tender the matter to your insurance company. The insurance company will hire a lawyer to defend you (at their cost). When you get auto insurance, you are essentially purchasing two things. The duty to defend and the duty to pay up to the policy limits of your insurance policy.

If you have insurance, your insurer will hire the lawyer and the only reason you would need a lawyer is if it looked like the possible total damages exceeded your policy limits. So contact your insurer and let them know she is (or may?) sue you.
